The work involves responsibility for the implementation and participation in the maintenance of park grounds, recreation, recreation areas, and swimming pools. An incumbent of this position is responsible for assisting in the planning and leading the work of park personnel in the safe, efficient, and economical operation of the physical facilities and equipment used for recreation purposes. The position is distinguished from Park Maintenance Supervisor by the limited responsibility for planning and scheduling the work to be performed. The work is performed under the general direction of the Parks Maintenance Supervisor. Supervision is exercised over subordinate staff engaged in maintenance activities. In the absence of the Parks Maintenance Supervisor, the Assistant Parks Maintenance Supervisor assumes all of his/her duties and responsibilities. Does related work as required.
Two years of experience in maintaining recreation facilities, grounds, and equipment.
Possession of an appropriate Motor Vehicle Operator’s license, a CDL-B, issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles which must be maintained during the entire length of appointment.
May prepare work schedules and assign personnel and equipment; Assists in the supervision of the construction and maintenance of park grounds, athletic fields, and other recreation areas; Assists in the supervision of the seeding, sodding, and fertilizing of athletic fields and park grounds; Assists in the supervision of the repair and erection of playground equipment; Inspects buildings, grounds, and equipment to insure the they are in safe condition to be used by participants; Instructs subordinates in safe and efficient methods of performing buildings and grounds maintenance tasks; Assists in the supervision of the flooding and maintenance of the ice rinks; Reviews work performed by subordinates by on-site inspections; May direct the removal of snow and ice from park area, sidewalks, and roads; prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports such as equipment inventory, purchase orders, vehicle maintenance records, ledger of expenditures, monthly activity reports, and personnel records; Purchases, within prescribed limits, equipment, and supplies; Confers with Deputy Commissioner of Public Works in such areas as work to be performed, equipment required, and budget preparation.

Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, terminology, and safety precautions used in the maintenance and repair of parks grounds and recreational areas, facilities, and equipment; skills in the use and care of power tools and motorized equipment; ability to work from rough sketches and blueprints; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written directions; ability to lay out and supervise the work of subordinates; ability to prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports; ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs including word processing, spreadsheet, and database at an acceptable rate of accuracy and speed; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
