Distinguishing Features Of The Class: 


This position is responsible for the performance of skilled carpentry work involved in the construction, alteration and repair of existing and new facilities. The work is performed under the general supervision of a higher level technical supervisor. Supervision may be exercised over semi-skilled or unskilled workers assigned for specific projects. Does related work as required. 

Minimum Qualifications: 


  1. Two years of full-time experience as a Carpenter at the journey level;  or
  2. Four years of full-time experience in assisting a Carpenter or as a Carpenter’s Helper.


Eligibility for appropriate N.Y. State Driver’s License at time of application; possession at time of appointment.  Must maintain NYS Driver’s License during the entire length of appointment.

Typical Work Activities: 

Builds, repairs and installs items such as partitions, floors, counters, cabinets, doors, windows, concrete forms; Reads and interprets rough sketches and working plans; Draws up list of materials for the work to be done; Assembles materials, tools, and equipment required to accomplish the work; Lays out and cuts materials for the job using rulers, tape measures, hand and electrical tools; Draws rough sketches and working drawings; Works with materials integral to the carpentry trade, including wood, plastics, aluminum, concrete; Oversees and inspects the work of assistants or helpers assigned for specific projects; May recommend to supervisor, and order the kind, quantity and quality of materials to be used; May oversee and inspect the work of outside contractors.

Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Personal Characteristics:

Good knowledge of the practices, procedures, materials, tools, and safety precautions of the carpentry trade;  good  knowledge of building and safety codes and practices applicable to the carpentry trade; ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, working drawings and rough sketches; ability to plan and layout carpentry work, ability to understand written and verbal instructions; ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates assigned for specific projects; thoroughness; Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs including word processing, spreadsheet, and database at an acceptable rate of accuracy and speed; and physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
