City Demolishes Longtime First Ward Eyesore


BINGHAMTON, N.Y.) — Mayor Richard C. David today announced demolition has begun at 76 Glenwood Ave., a longtime symbol of blight in the City’s First Ward.

The building, formerly Yonda’s Bar, has sat vacant and deteriorating for years, a growing source of frustration and concern among residents.

“This property is an example of the symbols of blight that are scattered throughout our City, damaging property values, inviting criminal activity and frustrating residents,” said Mayor David. “By aggressively pursuing the demolition of these eyesores rather than allowing them to languish, we are taking steps to restore the quality of life in our neighborhoods and turning residents’ frustration into hope.”

The demolition of 76 Glenwood Ave. is unique as the City did not acquire the property through the standard two-year foreclosure process. In targeting this infamous eyesore — a commercial building without a plan — the City negotiated purchase of the property from a private seller to speed up the demolition process. The purchase cost was $20,603.

The Glenwood Ave. property is the fifth building to be torn down this year under the City’s demolition program, which has targeted what Mayor David calls “symbols of blight.” Last month, the City demolished four dilapidated residential properties on the South Side. More demolitions are planned for the summer.

All Around Excavating, of Johnson City, is completing the demolition at a cost of $31,123. Funding comes from City’s General Fund.

Mayor David first announced plans to demolish the Glenwood Ave. eyesore in his 2017 State of the City Address. Councilman Giovanni Scaringi and members of the First Ward Neighborhood Watch joined Mayor David for today’s announcement.

“Residents deserve to live in neighborhoods that are not blemished by unsightly and unsafe properties” said Mayor David. “We will continue to take an aggressive approach in battling blight across our City, making our neighborhoods safer and improving quality of life for residents.”
