Department Overview
The Office of Vital Statistics records all births and deaths occurring within the City of Binghamton since 1884. As these records are highly confidential, there are restrictions on who may obtain these documents. For more information on who is legally authorized to obtain a birth or death record, please review the information provided below, or visit the New York State Department of Health website.
Information Needed to Obtain a Birth Certificate
Applicants must provide the following information in order to obtain a birth certificate:
- Name. First, full middle, last.
- Date of birth. Month, date, year.
- Mother's Name. First, full middle, maiden last.
- Father’s Name. First, full middle, last.
- Reason. Please include a statement as to why you need this record.
- Identification. Photocopy of your current driver's license or non-driver's identification. If you do not have either of these records, we will need two different utility bills dated within the past thirty days.
- Payment. Money order or cashier's check, $10 each. Make payments payable to "City of Binghamton."

Information Needed to Obtain a Death Certificates
Applicants must provide the following information in order to obtain a death certificate:
- Deceased's Name. First, full middle, last.
- Date of Death. Month, date, year.
- Reason. Please include a statement as to why you are requesting this record.
- Identification. Photocopy of your current driver's license.
- Payment. Money order or cashier's check, $10 each. Make payments payable to "City of Binghamton."

Information Needed for a Genealogical Search
- Deceased's Name.
- Deceased's Date of Birth.
- Deceased's Date of Death.
- Relationship. Please state your relationship to the deceased individual.
- Payment. Money order or cashier's check, $22 each. Make payments payable to "City of Binghamton."
Birth certificates must be on file for 75 years. If the birth is after 1900, you will need a certified death certificate in order to obtain the birth record.
Death certificates must be on file for 50 years.
