Distinguishing Features Of The Class: 

The duties involve responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of specialized heavy automotive equipment used in highway maintenance or construction projects.  Greater skill is required than in the operation of other types of equipment and there is a greater responsibility for the safety of others.  Additional responsibility is involved for making minor repairs to equipment and for ordinary servicing.  The incumbent will exercise supervision over subordinates assigned to work on specific projects.  The work is performed under general supervision.  Does related work as required. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

A minimum of 6 months operating a combination of at least 2 pieces of equipment listed under typical work activities or their equivalence.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Possession of the appropriate CDL motor vehicle operator license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and maintain the license during the entire length of appointment

Typical Work Activities: 

Operation of equipment covered under MEO plus the following:  Bobcat/skid-steer, dozer, grader, roller/compactors, tractor trailers, snow loader, conveyors, street sealing equipment, belt loaders, snow-go crane, backhoe, front-end loaders, Paver. May be required to operate additional equipment as needed. Performs a variety of minor repairs on motor equipment and services small pumps and Heavy equipment; Performs routine preventive maintenance functions on all vehicles.

FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Good knowledge of the operation of heavy equipment and Tractor/trailers; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to make simple repairs to the equipment;  ability to supervise a small work crew;  mechanical aptitude;  dependability;  physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position,  Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs including word processing, spreadsheet, and database at an acceptable rate of accuracy and speed;  Ability to make decisions on the spot when necessary and those that will have an effect on the outcome of the project.
