Distinguishing Features Of The Class: 

General Purpose

Students who intern with the City of Binghamton Department of Parks & Recreation (“Parks”) will accompany their supervisor to various community/governmental meetings; will gain local government and parks and recreation experience; and will be given a research project that incorporates their interests within the field.

Supervision Received

Students will be under the direction and general supervision of a Recreation Supervisor and/or Program Supervisor. Will also have opportunities to shadow the Assistant Director and Commissioner.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Length of Internship

Student must maintain a schedule permitting easy access for citizens and one that fits the needs of the department’s programs, events and meeting needs. Applications accepted January 1st to March 31st to the Personnel Office. Internship starts 1st Monday in June and ends last Friday in August, but may be extended as agreed up by the Commissioner, Personnel Office, and intern.

Typical Work Activities: 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Interns will be involved with various programs and events offered by the department. Including but not limited to: youth programming, adult programming, aquatics programing, and special events If there is a specific area with more interest, potential additional time can be spent being involved in that area.

Research the development of new program/event in the intern’s division of choice as it fits the department’s needs and budget.

Objectives

Develop public understanding and participation in parks and recreation programs through public relations activities.

Establish and maintain cooperative planning and working relationships with other public and volunteer community agencies.
