Distinguishing Features Of The Class: 

This is technical clerical work on employees’ time worked records and in computing and preparing payroll data.  The work involving a high degree of accuracy is performed in accordance with employee/employer contractual agreements.  The incumbent deals directly with employees on their time credit use as well as on the accuracy of salary data.  The work is performed under the general supervision of a higher level fiscal or administrative employee.  Does related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and six months of clerical experience primarily involving the maintenance of financial accounts and records.

Typical Work Activities: 

Computes and posts to computer work sheets changes to salaries as a result of changes in pay rates, changes in deductions, garnishes, etc.; Sorts paychecks for distribution to various schools, agencies or work units; Maintains employee leave time, accrual and use records based on authorized sick leave, personal time and vacation credits; Verifies payroll data for accuracy and completeness; Prepares a variety of monthly, quarterly and annual reports to the retirement systems, withholding tax information, social security costs and related reports; Reviews, checks, recomputes and corrects any problems affecting an employee’s payroll deductions; Segregates salaries categorically according to function or program for proper posting to accounts such as snow and ice control, food service, Federal aided programs, etc.; Files, types and operates a variety of equipment in performance of duties.


Good knowledge of payroll procedures; good knowledge of business arithmetic; working knowledge of Federal and State laws with respect to payroll preparations; skill in making arithmetic computations quickly and accurately; ability to type; ability to deal with employees and with state, federal and public retirement system employees; accuracy; tact; Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs including word processing, spreadsheet, and database at an acceptable rate of accuracy and speed;   physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
