Distinguishing Features Of The Class: 

The work involves responsibility for planning and supervising the collection of refuse on a City wide basis and the maintenance and repair of City streets.  Work is performed in accordance with general policies and objectives with leeway permitted for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work.  General supervision is exercised over equipment operators and streets and sanitation workers.  Does related work as required.  

Minimum Qualifications: 

High school diploma or GED and three years of supervisory experience involving the operation of motor equipment associated with the repair and maintenance of streets or the collection and disposal of refuse.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSPossession of an appropriate level motor vehicle operator license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles at time of appointment and maintain the license during the entire length of appointment.  

Typical Work Activities: 

Prepares work schedules and assigns operators and sanitation workers to garbage and refuse collection routes;  Prepares work projects and assigns equipment operators and laborers to specific street maintenance and repair activities;  Oversees major street repair and maintenance activities by supervising operations, reassigning equipment and personnel and in obtaining needed maintenance and repair materials and supplies;  Instructs sanitation and street maintenance workers in safety precautions and by investigating the causes for personnel injuries and equipment accidents;  Checks operating conditions of equipment and prepares schedules for essential maintenance activities;  Supervises the removal of snow and ice control activities on City streets;  Supervises the cleaning of streets and removal of leaves;  Investigates complaints regarding the collection of refuse and street maintenance:  Checks over employee time records and time uses of equipment;  Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICSThorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, terminology and safety precautions used in the maintenance and repair of streets and equipment;  Ability to work from rough sketches and blueprints;  Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions;  Ability to plan and direct the work of others;  Skill in the operation of motor equipment and power tools;  ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs including word processing, spreadsheet, and database at an acceptable rate of accuracy and speed;  Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
