Distinguishing Features Of The Class: 

This is a skilled position in repairing, rebuilding and replacing pumps.  The incumbent is also responsible for the maintenance of pumping stations, equipment, generators and motors.  The work is performed under general direction and in accordance with prescribed procedures with wide leeway in planning and executing work assignments.  Does related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Two years of experience in the repair, replacement, maintenance and rebuilding of large capacity pumps.

MUST HAVE VALID NEW YORK STATE DRIVER’S LICENSE. Must maintain the license during the entire length of appointment.

Typical Work Activities: 

Repairs, rebuilds and replaces large capacity water and wastewater pumps and auxiliary equipment and parts; Supervises the installation and repair of mountings, pumps, drive shafts, universal joints and related pump parts; Plans, supervises and participates in the routine maintenance activities of pump stations such as mopping and waxing floors, painting walls, floors and ceilings and mowing grass; Operates drills, grinders and lathes in repairing and fabricating parts of pumps; Leads in and participates in rebuilding, repacking and repairing pumps; Sets up programs to maintain pumps at operational levels; Leads in the emergency operations of pumps and equipment during high water and flooding conditions; Operates motor equipment in transporting workers and equipment to pumping stations.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICSGood knowledge in repairing, replacing, rebuilding and maintaining large capacity pumping equipment;  good knowledge in the operation and safety precautions of tools in fabricating and repairing pumps;  ability to read and follow specifications in the construction of concrete mounts and in replacing and rebuilding pumps;  ability to plan and supervise the work of others;  dependability;  ability to keep minor records in the use of materials and supplies and equipment;  ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs including word processing, spreadsheet, and database at an acceptable rate of accuracy and speed;  physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
