The City will offer a free electronics drop-off day on Saturday, June 25 from 9am to 1pm at the Department of Public Works Garage at 17 Broad St.
New York State requires residents to properly recycle electronic waste. As a result, many electronics cannot be collected curbside with residents’ garbage.
During Saturday’s event, City residents will be able to drop off the following items at the DPW garage for recycling, free of charge: televisions, monitors, computers, laptops, printers, fax machines, cell phones, radios, stereos (no speakers), VCRs, GPS units and gaming consoles.
No other types of electronics will be accepted. Most countertop appliances, such as coffee makers, toasters and microwaves, can be placed in the regular trash, along with vacuums and landline telephones.
To dispose of larger appliances, including refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners, residents should call DPW dispatch at (607) 772-7020 to schedule a curbside pickup.
Saturday’s free drop-off event is for City of Binghamton residents only. Proof of residency, such as a driver’s license with a City address, will be required at time of drop off.
Following the free drop-off, which is organized in partnership with the Broome County Division of Solid Waste Management, the collected electronics will be packaged and transported off site for proper recycling.
The Broome County Landfill (286 Knapp Road, Binghamton) also offers designated collection days each month when Broome County residents can drop off electronic waste for free. On non-collection days, residents are charged a $5 fee.
