DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position involves the performance of semi-skilled tasks in pruning, trimming and felling of trees. The incumbent also performs a variety of tasks in relation to the parks maintenance including unskilled or laboring work. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Parks Maintenance Supervisor. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Trims, thins and tops trees as directed, using boom buckets when necessary around wires, houses and cars; Fells large trees and removes dangerous limbs as directed; Sprays trees, cleans and fills tree cavities and applies tree wound dressings; Plants and transplants trees in pre-determined locations; Maintains all equipment and tools used in tree trimming and pruning activities; Performs a variety of work in parks maintenance by operating equipment and vehicles and in doing a variety of work in support of other parks maintenance activities.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the practices, materials and methods used in felling spraying, trimming of trees; good knowledge of the planting, cultivating, transplanting and pruning of trees; skill in trimming and felling trees; ability to climb and to work at considerable height; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; dependability; ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs including word processing, spreadsheet, and database at an acceptable rate of accuracy and speed; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEither:

A. Two (2) years of full-time paid experience, or its part-time equivalent, trimming, pruning, felling, planting and/or transplanting trees; OR

B. Successful completion of coursework in arboriculture, forestry, urban forestry or a closely related field at a regionally accredited college or university, or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees, may be substituted for the required experience with three (3) semester credit hours being equivalent to three (3) months of experience up to one (1) year.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of N.Y.S. Class 3 CDL-B Driver's License and maintain the license during the entire length of appointment.
