The City of Binghamton is undertaking site reuse planning for the Binghamton Cogeneration Power Plant, a former cogeneration power plant. The plant is located at 22 Charles Street in the First Ward neighborhood of Binghamton. The site is approximately 1.72 acres in size and features a single, two-story industrial building that was constructed in 1991. It has been vacant since 2017 when the plant closed.
A site planning study is being facilitated through the planning firm LaBella Associates for the City of Binghamton and is supported through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA)’s Just Transition Site Reuse Planning Program. This program represents an initiative that provides technical services to communities to align with New York State’s goal of achieving 100% zero-emission electricity by 2040, under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA).
The study will evaluate the impact, potential alternative uses, and strategies necessary to address the closure of the Binghamton Cogeneration Power Plant. The City of Binghamton understands the importance of engaging with stakeholders in the community, which is why we have developed a comprehensive Stakeholder Outreach Plan. We welcome input and feedback from community members, local businesses, and other stakeholders to ensure our operations align with the community’s needs.
Mayor Kraham said, “I would like to thank NYSERDA for awarding grant funds to enable the City of Binghamton to study sustainable reuses of the former Anitec power plant property. This study will help the City identify the best approaches and resources for deconstructing the power generation equipment, and identify opportunities for reusing the building to help grow the Charles Street Business Park and create additional business and job opportunities.”
