In 2011, the City of Binghamton hired a consultant to help produce a modern, up-to-date set of Design Guidelines for Historic Properties. The new City of Binghamton Historic Design Guidelines were official adopted by City Council on October 5, 2011. They provide information on Historic Preservation approaches and procedures, design principles, architectural styles, and applicable City laws.

Full Historic Design Guidelines
Because of the size of the file, the Binghamton Historic Design Guidelines are available both as a single, full-length document (above) and as four individual parts (below). These four parts include all of the information found in the full-length version, but broken down into easier to download segments:

Historic Design Guidelines Part 1: Historic Preservation Approach and Procedures—this section provides background information on Historic Preservation in the City of Binghamton, including which properties require review by the Commission on Architecture and Urban Design and the procedures for such review.

Historic Design Guidelines Part 2: Preservation Guidelines—this section includes more specific information on proper preservation techniques and design guidelines; this section includes information on topics such as: doors, windows, siding, paint, signage, storefront, etc.

Historic Design Guidelines Part 3: Architectural Style Guide—this section includes information on the various architectural styles found in the City of Binghamton.
