In early 2020, The City of Binghamton sought funding through the Preserve New York Grant program provided by the Preservation League of New York State in order to hire a consultant to prepare a National Register Nomination Form for the existing eligible Main Street Historic District within the city. The primary objective of the City’s application was to increase the number of properties eligible for both the Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentive Program and the New York State Commercial Rehabilitation Tax Credit Program. Further, the City also seeks to increase the number of eligible applicants for the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation's Environmental Protection Fund Grant Program for Parks, Preservation and Heritage (EPF). Through the pursuit of these objectives, the City of Binghamton aims to support both private and not-for-profit property owners within the eligible district. Property owner support and inquiry served as the impetus for the City’s application.

Successful in our application, the City selected Environmental Design and Research, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, & Environmental Services, D.P.C. (EDR), a certified WBE, to draft a National Register Nomination Form for the eligible district. With the draft nomination form complete, the district is now being considered by the New York State Board for Historic Preservation for nomination to the State and National Registers of Historic Places at its next meeting on September 9, 2021. As drafted, the district consists of 112 properties found along a section of both Main and Front Streets.
